Two Energy Bills That Need To Pass |
Midweek
April 14, 2010 |
By Dan Boylan
For four decades, Hawaii politicians of every persuasion have talked of the state as a laboratory for the development of alternative energy. “We’ve got it all,” the speech goes, “geothermal, solar, wind, wave, biomass.” And so on.
But in 2010, Hawaii remains hopelessly energy dependent. We burn oil. We talk alternative energy. Oh, there’s a state tax credit, a wind farm or two, solar water heaters on a very small percentage of homes in a state where the sun always shines, a tax credit, and a new law that says developers must put solar water heaters on houses built from now on. Supermarkets and retailers say the bills would only increase costs to consumers
By Nina Wu
STORY SUMMARY
Hawaii’s merchants want lawmakers to bag several proposals they say would cost their customers dearly.
Three bills before the state Senate would either prohibit the use of plastic bags by retailers, or provide a financial incentive not to use them.
The Hawaii Food Industry Association and the Retail Merchants of Hawaii are fighting the bills, mainly because of the costs involved.
“Everything’s going to be passed onto the consumer,” said Richard Botti, president of the HFIA. “If it costs the store more, the store’s got to include it in the prices.”
Supporters say it doesn’t make sense to have plastic bags filling up Hawaii’s landfills. Read Article |

KAPOLEI — More than 350 residents in the Villages of
Kapolei haven't received a single parcel of mail at their homes
since the beginning of this year, and they're not happy about
the lack of service.
The homes, which sit on a 52-acre subdivision known as Kaupea,
are owned by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) and
were purposely built without home delivery boxes. But residents
say that even the promised cluster box units (CBUs) - which
the United States Postal Service (USPS) has been adding to new
housing developments across the country as a way of slashing
growing costs in mail service - aren't an available option at
the moment. Read Article

Whoever the so-called Democrat was who evidently grilled Sen.
Mike Gabbard about his "religious affiliation" ("Sen.

not represent the values and attitude of the Democratic Party.
It's intolerable for those who call themselves Democrats to

party that respects and values everyone regardless of their
race, ethnic group, gender or religion.
The Democratic Party doesn't have any room for religious bigots.

| Democrats oppose gay
marriage
I'm a proud Democrat, as my parents and grandparents are. The
main reason I'm happy that Mike Gabbard has joined our party
is that I now feel I, and the vast majority of Democrats who
voted to protect traditional marriage, have at least one of
our Democratic leaders who is in touch with our values.
The truth is that most of us do not want civil unions or same-sex
marriage in Hawaii. With Gabbard a member of the majority party,
it will be even less likely that gay activists will be able
to shove this down our throats.
Gabbard is a great addition to the Democratic Party and will
do a lot of good by bringing crossover Republican and independent
voters to our party.

Hawaii Republicans treated
Gabbard poorly
As a longtime Republican, I don't hold it against Sen. Mike Gabbard
for changing parties. I'm angry at our party leadership for never
really showing Mike the respect that he deserved. He was always
treated like a second-class Republican by the governor and others.
Who can forget when Mike courageously offered in 2000 to serve
as a Republican candidate in Congress, ready to take on incumbent
Neil Abercrombie? Everyone knew that Mike had a real chance to
defeat Abercrombie, but Lingle didn't want to share the spotlight.
If he had won, he would've been the top Republican in the state
and not her (she was just the party chairwoman then).
I'm just surprised he didn't leave the party sooner.
