KITV - Mike Gabbard's responses
1. Under what circumstances would you support reviving the mandatory military draft?
I strongly oppose the draft.
I have great faith in our democracy. If a war has the support of the American people, there will be no shortage of volunteers. And if a war doesn’t have the support of the American people, then we shouldn’t be in it.
I bring a personal perspective to this issue. My daughter Tulsi is a member of the National Guard and recently volunteered to go to Iraq.
A few days ago, my wife Carol and I were honored to take part in the deployment ceremony for Tulsi and her fellow soldiers going to Iraq.
We were very moved by the feeling amongst the family members saying goodbye to loved ones. Our great pride was mixed with the pain of knowing that someone we love very much might not make it back to us.
Unlike Ed Case, I will give unwavering support to our troops, their missions and their families.
2. Is a tax increase (or restoration of old tax rates) necessary, and if not, how would you reduce the deficit?
I’m opposed to any tax increase. We’re overtaxed as it is! Not only are individuals overtaxed, but small businesses are overtaxed. I’ve started and operated small businesses. I know the struggle of small businesses—I know what it’s like to be overburdened by taxes.
I’m opposed to any attempt to increase our taxes. Taxes hurt people and hurt our economy.
If you’re like me and most Americans, nearly half the money you make goes to pay taxes. We need to cut taxes, especially on small businesses and working men and women.
Unlike my opponent, I’ve signed the American Tax Reform pledge to not increase taxes.
The Americans for Tax Reform say my opponent votes in favor of 80% of the bills before Congress that increase taxes.
To reduce the federal budget deficit, we must get congressional spending under control. Unfortunately, my opponent recently voted against limiting how much of our money Congress can spend.
Unlike my opponent, I will fight to limit congressional spending and reduce your tax burden.
