Things are getting a little chippy at the state Capitol over civil unions.
State Sen. Mike Gabbard, D-19th (Kapolei, Makakilo, Waikele), said he was punched in the chest by a gay rights activist at the traditional values rally on Sunday. The senator also said the man tried to jam a protest sign in his face before he was subdued.
Gabbard, one of the leading opponents of same-sex marriage in the 1990s, filed a police report but declined to press charges. He said he is considering whether to ask for a temporary restraining order against the activist.
The senator also provided pictures of the activist to Ben Villaflor, the Senate’s Sergeant-at-Arms, in case the man shows up at the Capitol.
*Update: Gabbard said Thursday he plans to file charges.
