UH West Oahu is one of the newest schools on the island of Oahu. Students recently had the opportunity to relax from studies and to celebrate the success of education during UH West Oahu Day on April 6th, 2010.
School spirit was strongly displayed by many clubs who put up banners to help boost student participation. Music filled the air as a local band, TTYM (Talk to You Music), entertained students and guests with songs and music throughout the event. A local celebrity, Kealoha the founder of HawaiiSlam, also performed some of his poetry pieces as entertainment. Food, games, raffles, and prizes were all used to let the students relax and have fun. The new school mascot was also announced: "The Owls."
Alyssa Gampang, student government, helped set up the event, excited to help the students and faulty have a day to celebrate the accomplishments over the past semester and enjoy the day of celebration and unification of the past and future. "This year we are particularly proud of UHWO Day! Historically, it had been noted that many students did not get involved in school activities but this year was different. This year the student government noticed a new sense of ownership and pride among its student body, especially the new freshmen on campus!"
Some important political figures, Senator Mike Gabbard, Representative Karen Awana, and Councilman Donovan Delacruz, were just a few who attended the event to help boost support through the community for UHWO. The school was heavily supported from both city and state legislation to encourage students to continue in their studies and strive for excellence in both education and community involvement.
The day was not only a day of celebration but awareness. Several clubs came out to support and boost their clubs for membership and cooperation. The clubs had the opportunity of informing students of what they represent and how to sign up and help get involved within the school community. Several clubs like the Humanities Club, Accounting Club, and Psychology club, had booths promoting their clubs and celebrating their outstanding accomplishments and explain the goals for the future.
