Aloha,
Here are some of the things I've been working on at the Capitol.
Gabbard Bills Pass Senate Unanimously
I was happy to see two bills that I introduced, SB 1891 and
SB 1617, pass the Senate unanimously on March 6, 2007. Both
of these bills would help to better protect our community. SB
1891 would allow the Department of Land and Natural Resources
to make arrests, confiscate vehicles, and issue criminal citations
to address the problem of ATVs and other vehicles creating a
safety hazard for families, desecrating native Hawaiian burial
grounds, and causing environmental damage to our beaches. SB
1617 would close a loophole in the law and protect homeowners
from frivolous lawsuits which could be brought by an intruder
who is injured while breaking into someone's home. Both these
bills will now crossover to the House for their consideration.
Gabbard Launches Petition Drive
I was shocked to learn that the hours of the Barbers Point Post
Office were reduced to Monday-Saturday 9am-12pm on November
6, 2006. Several weeks ago, I wrote a letter to the Postmaster
requesting that USPS reconsider their decision. Unfortunately,
I received a letter back stating they had no intention of doing
that. I decided the best way to let USPS know how the community
feels was to launch a petition drive. Please contact my office
if you would like to help with this effort.
Honoring Christian Mahuna
You might have heard on the news that Kapolei Middle School
6th grader and Kalaeloa resident, Christian Mahuna, had both
his legs severely broken in a hit and run accident on February
2, 2007. Christian was waiting for his school bus when the driver
recklessly ran over his legs in broad daylight. I had the opportunity
to present Christian with an honorary certificate from the State
Senate on February 21 in the Senate Chambers. If you have any
information on this still unsolved case, please call Crime Stoppers
at 955-8300.
Talk Stories
I'll be hosting talk stories in both Kunia and Kapolei in April.
On April 14th, Representative Sharon Har and I will be co-hosting
a talk-story in Kunia. Please contact my office for the date
and time if you plan on attending. On April 28th, we'll meet
at the Kapolei Starbucks (outside seating, near the Chevron
Station) at 9:00am. I hope to see you there!
Please contact me if I can help you in any way. My phone number
is 586-6830 and email is sengabbard@capitol.hawaii.gov.
Mahalo for the privilege of serving you! |
