Community Update

Voice Of Kapolei
June 15, 2007

Aloha,

I hope you and your family are well. Here’s a brief update on a few things I'd like to share with you:

North-South Road Moving Forward
This year the Legislature appropriated $55 million for the North-South Road. As many of you know, the North-South Road has been a dream for over 30 years. Recently, I had the opportunity to drive out to the site between Ewa and Kapolei and saw with my own eyes that the construction is underway. Even better, I went up in a small plane and got a great aerial view. The North-South Road will be a six-lane divided road from Kapolei Parkway to the H-1 Freeway. The entire project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2009. Once this road is open, traffic will be reduced on Fort Barrette Road and Fort Weaver Road in Ewa.

Honoring 4th Grade Students of IPA
I was pleased to present an honorary certificate to Island Pacific Academy fourth grade students and teachers Luann Sackrider and Lisa Fabro for their outstandingly successful Malama Ka Aina project and for winning the top prize in the nationwide Disney Adventure’s All-Star Contest on June 4th. The IPA students won the Disney award by collecting over 6,000 recyclable cans and bottles and raising $300, which they donated to Malama Popoki, an organization dedicated to the trap-neuter-return-manage program for feral cats. Additionally, the students found time to volunteer at Waimea Audubon Park with weeding, composting, mulching, and clearing streams. Disney awarded the students $10,000, with half going to IPA and the other half divided between Malama Popoki and the Waimea Audubon Park.

Listen-Story
My next listen-story will be co-hosted with Rep. Karen Awana (Nanakuli, Ko Olina, Honokai Hale) and will be held at the Kamokila Community Park meeting room on Saturday, July 14th at 9am. This will be my first listen-story held in the Honokai Hale/Ko Olina communities. Please come. If you can't, call or email your concerns.

If I can help you in any way, please call 586-6830 or email me at sengabbard@capitol.hawaii.gov. Mahalo for the privilege of serving you!
