Parents can get some pointers on child-rearing from prolific
author and former family psychologist John Rosemond, who will
be in Hawaii next week to share his knowledge.
His first talk, “Assuming the Power of Parenthood,"is
scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at Hope Chapel Kapolei in
Kalaeloa.
Rosemond’s visit is sponsored by Stand Up For America,
an educational non-profit organization co-founded by state Sen.Mike
Gabbard and daughter Tulsi Gabbard Tamayo.
“I like Mr. Rosemond’s down-to-earth, old-school,
common-sense approach to parenting,” explained the senator, who
with his wife,Carol, has five children. “(Rosemond) helps
parents raise kids who are respectful, responsible and resourceful.
Besides being an entertaining speaker with an international
reputation,he’s performing a great service to families,
teachers, the children and our society in general.”
Of Rosemond’s 12 parenting books, Gabbard has read Because
I Said So! and A Family of Value.
According to Gabbard, in A Family of Value Rosemond says the
culture of the United States is changing partly because children
have been raised to think they’re the center of the universe,
therefore growing up to be disrespectful to authority, and feeling
entitled to things without earning them. These changes in attitudes
are manifest in the workplace, in schools and in families.
Gabbard said Rosemond can help Hawaii’s families retrieve
the once-cherished but now discredited values that made this
country great.
Rosemond’s repertoire of literary works span various
areas of parenting with titles like To Spank or Not to Spank,
Making the ‘Terrible’ Two’s Terrific! and
Teen-Proofing: Fostering Responsible Decision Making in Your
Teenager. Other works include Parenting by the Book: Biblical
Wisdom for Raising Your Child; The New Six Point Plan for Raising
Happy, Healthy Children; and John Rosemond’s New Parent
Power!. He also wrote Family Building: The Five Fundamentals
of Effective Parenting and Ending the Homework Hassle.
Rosemond has three speeches scheduled Nov. 8. He speaks to
Outrigger Hotels employees at 11 a.m. followed by a session
primarily for teachers at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church
at Koolau Golf Course. The final presentation, “Parenting
the Strong-Willed Child,” is at 7 p.m. at Koolau Golf
Course.
