KAPOLEI, Hawaii (KITV4) -- A vision years in the making is slowly becoming a reality as community leaders prepare for hundreds of residences on Hawaiian Home Lands.

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) held a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday marking the start of construction at Kauluokaha'i Increment II-C.

The development is part of a master-planned community on a 404-acre parcel on the 'Ewa Plains.

A DHHL vision dating back to 2019, sets aside 24-acres that will house 127 single-family house lots.

For many with the department, it's another step toward fulfilling the promise to get more beneficiaries off the waitlist and into homes.

"We have phase 2c here. We also have a phase D, E and F. And under the plans we have for these different parcels is 548 single-family residences," said Kali Watson, Chairman of the Hawaiian Homes Commission, "And then we also have a phase 2a in the back, which is designed to put in 300 multi-family units."

DHHL is also planning for future developments to include Kupuna Housing and affordable transitional housing.
